All Colorado CDL holders are required to be medically qualified to drive a CMV by the means of a valid DOT medical certificate or medical waiver.
The regulations require that your motor vehicle status be “Medically Certified” to drive a CMV. This status will be controlled by the expiration date of your DOT Medical Certificate that you submit to the DMV. If your DOT Medical Certificate is expired, then you will have a Medically Certified status of “Not Certified” and you cannot legally drive a CMV.
On the first day of your DOT Medical Certificate expiring, you are no longer qualified to operate a CDL type CMV.
On the 10th day of the DMV not receiving an updated DOT Medical Certificate, the DMV will change your medical certification status to “Not Certified” and the DMV will also mail out a letter to you explaining that you cannot operate a CDL type CMV and what you need to do to comply.
On the 30th day of the DMV not receiving an updated DOT Medical Certificate, the DMV will cancel your entire license and at this point you have no driving privileges.

MEDICAL EXAMINERS MUST CONTINUE TO ISSUE MEDICAL CERTIFICATES TO ALL DRIVERS
The FMCSA has requested that all medical examiners continue providing drivers with a paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate – Form MCSA-5876, so that Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders can provide a copy to the State licensing agency, and the non-CDL drivers can provide the documentation to their employers and Federal and State enforcement officials.
The Agency is currently completing efforts to put into place an electronic system to enable medical examiners to transmit the medical certificate information from the National Registry system to the State licensing agencies.
Until that system is completed, which compliance date according FMCSA is June 23, 2025, medical examiners must continue to issue paper copies of the medical certificates to drivers who pass the medical exam.
ALL DRIVERS MUST CONTINUE TO CARRY A PAPER COPY OF THEIR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Commercial Drivers – You still need to carry a paper copy of your medical card, until FMCSA announces that this is no longer necessary.

My dot medical card is good for 3 months due to high blood pressure. Do I have to retake the complete physical just to get my blood pressure checked
I went for my 1sr DOT physical, I passed but the nurse practitioner asked me to have my doctor sign a form saying the meds I sometimes take to sleep would not affect me, which he did. I took the firm back and the NP said I can’t give you a certificate because you take this medication. I don’t taje it every night and my drug screen was clean what can I do?
@ Jill
Depending on your class cdl, will depend on meds you can take. Why would a nurse practitioner ask for a completed doctors’ release and then not accept it.
My question is “If my DOT Physical expires for how long can it be expired before you are required to retake the written test and driver’s test? This is for Colorado Commercial Driver’s license.
Is there a size requirement for the paper copy that personnel need to keep with them? We would like to laminate copies for our team members to keep in their wallets.
@ Ashley
As long as a DOT officer can read it with the naked eye at night with a flashlight, you should be fine.
Is it the employee reasonability to submit the new updated MED card to the state or is the responsibility of the clinic to do that?
@ Vanessa B
It is your responsibility, though some clinics may do it for you. Make sure you follow-up on it to confirm it was done, received and input to the states data base.
My medical examiner revoked my medical card for a medical condition that I am treating. I have provide evidence from other medical doctors that My condition is stable. How do I appeal this?
I didn’t get my DOT physical done last year because I was not driving for anyone. What do I have to do to get my CDL back in good standing. Other then get a physical done
@ Damien W
Check with your local drivers license department for guidance in their process. Most likely all you need is a new medical card on file with DLD and whatever cost there is to renew/reinstate your cld.
Hello I have a quick question how can I submit my DOT medical card online. Any email I can submit it to.
@ Nhlanhla I D
You will need to check with your local drivers license department (DLD) for their process and e-mail address.
